Review Standards & Testing Methodology

Every product on EvalShare is tested the same way. This page documents our standardized test protocol so you can understand exactly what our ratings mean and how we arrive at our verdicts.

1. Purchase

We buy every product at full retail price from Amazon.com. We do not accept review units, manufacturer samples, or paid placement. If a product costs $300 to test, we spend $300 of our own money.

This matters because review-unit bias is well-documented: products that arrive free from manufacturers are rated 0.5 to 1.5 stars higher on average than products purchased at retail.

2. Unboxing & First Impressions

On day 1, we record the unboxing experience, the contents of the box, build quality impressions, and any first-time setup hurdles. We also time the setup from “box open” to “fully working” — this is the metric that reflects the real user experience.

3. 14-Day Standardized Test

For security cameras, the test protocol includes:

  • Day 1-3: Setup & app pairing. We test both iOS and Android, and we test against both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi networks.
  • Day 4-7: Image quality in 5 lighting conditions: bright daylight, overcast, sunset (low light), full dark (IR night vision), and mixed indoor lighting.
  • Day 8-10: Motion detection accuracy. We log every false positive and false negative over 72 hours of real-world use.
  • Day 11-14: Smart home integration. We test against Alexa, Google Home, and where applicable, HomeKit. We also test IFTTT compatibility.

For 3D printing products, the test protocol includes:

  • Day 1-3: First-print success rate, calibration time, bed adhesion.
  • Day 4-7: Print quality at standard speed vs advertised high speed. We measure layer adhesion, dimensional accuracy, and surface finish.
  • Day 8-10: Material compatibility. We test with the manufacturer’s own material, plus 2-3 third-party materials.
  • Day 11-14: Long-run reliability. We run 5+ hour continuous prints and log any thermal, mechanical, or firmware issues.

4. Comparative Testing

No product exists in a vacuum. Every product is tested against 2-3 direct competitors in the same price bracket. Our comparison pages (for example, the Best Home Security Cameras 2026 guide) document the head-to-head data.

5. 90-Day Long-Term Follow-Up

Reviews are not single-moment snapshots. We revisit each product at 30, 60, and 90 days post-publication to log:

  • Reliability issues that emerge over time
  • Firmware updates that change behavior
  • Customer service interactions (when something breaks)
  • Changes in the competitive landscape

If a product’s long-term performance contradicts our initial review, we update the review with a clear “Updated” notice at the top.

How We Rate Products

Our star ratings are based on a weighted composite of:

  • 40% Core performance (the thing the product is supposed to do)
  • 25% Value for money (vs. competitors in the same price bracket)
  • 15% Build quality & reliability (long-term test results)
  • 10% Ease of use (setup, app, day-to-day friction)
  • 10% Ecosystem & support (smart home integration, customer service, warranty)

A product needs a 4.0+ composite to earn our “Recommended” badge.
